The Rose Bowl is called the "Grandaddy" of all the Bowl games and 2006 edition will be no different, featuring the top ranked Southern California Trojans (12-0) of the Pacific Ten Conference attempting to win a unprecendented third consecutive national title, but standing in the way of history are the #2 Texas Longhorns(12-0) of the Big 12 Conference, which makes the 2006 Rose Bowl the BCS Championship game and perhaps the most anticipated college football ever, the Rose Bowl will feature the Heisman Trophy winner USC Trojans RB Reggie Bush, and the 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the Heisman voting Texas Longhorns QB Vince Young and last year's Heisman Trophy winner and 3rd place finisher this year USC Trojans QB Matt Leinart......The Texas Longhorns will be attempting to win back-to-back Rose Bowls, as they defeated the Michigan Wolverines last season in a 38-37 thriller with Vince Young of the Texas Longhorns taking home the Game Most Valuable player award, but standing in the Texas Longhorns way is a juggernaut in the USC Trojans that has not tasted defeat in their last 34 games, the Rose Bowl is an evenly matched showdown and the statistics prove it, the Texas Longhorns are no.1 in the nation with an average of 50.92 points per game and the USC Trojans rank second with a scoring average of 50.0 points per game and have been called the greatest offense in the history of the sport......The Texas Longhorns offense is triggered by QB Vince Young who was terrific all season with 2,769 yards and 26 touchdown passes to go along with 793 yards rushing, but Young is not alone as Jamaal Charles, Ramonce Taylor, and Henry Melton of the Texas Longhorns have accounted for 32 TD'S which has the Texas Longhorns very confident......The USC Trojans offense is the most balanced unit in all the land with QB Matt Leinart of the USC Trojans being the leader and his numbers speak volumes as he completed 65% of his passes, threw for 3,450 yards 27 touchdowns against only 7 interceptions, but unbelievably Leinart was not the most important USC Trojan on offense, that honor goes to Heisman winner RB Reggie Bush who was a one man highlight reel with 1,658 rushing yards 15 touchdowns and a astounding 8.9 yards per carry average and added 3 more TD's on special teams, all in all Reggie Bush of the USC Trojans was the best college football in the country and one of the top performers to ever play the collegiate game, Bush's running mate RB LenDale White was superb as well rumbling for 1,167 yards and 21 touchdowns, as for the USC Trojans passing attack WR Dwayne Jarrett is arguably the best wideout in the land as he caught 81 passes for 1,153 yards and 15 TD'S, fellow WR Steve Smith is a terrific possession receiver and accounted for 928 yards receiving, all these weapons Coach Pete Carroll of the USC Trojans has at his fingertips, but they would not be nearly as affective if not for the offensive line, which is college football's best led by bookend T's Winston Justice and Taitusi Lutui, 5 USC Trojans made first or second team all-america offense this season, the Texas Longhorns possess a superb veteran defense that 6th in the country overall and allowed only 280.6 yards per game and only 14.6 points per game and are led by DT Rodrique Wright(1st team all-america) and S Michael Huff(1st team all-america) who anchors the nation's best secondary, only four opponents scored more than 20 points against the Texas Longhorns' stingy defensive unit, the USC Trojans offense versus the Texas Longhorns defense will be a titanic clash.....The USC Trojans stop unit had multiple injuries this season and had to replace 3 all americans but was once again a very good unit and a penchant for causing many turnovers and led the Pacific Ten Conference in total defense for the fourth straight year and is led by DE's Frostee Rucker and Lawrence Jackson who made life miserable for opposing passers, also Freshmen LB's Rey Maualuga and Brian Cushing made sensational debuts for the USC Trojans, and in the secondary veteran CB Justin Wyatt and young CB Josh Pinkard are the standouts, Texas Longhorns coach Mack Brown knows the task for the Texas Longhorns will be difficult with the USC Trojans basically playing a home game in the Rose Bowl but is excitedand stated What a great matchup! We're in great shape, we're 12-0, we're No. 2 in the country, I'm excited about going back to the Rose Bowl." The Rose Bowl is played in Pasadena , California on January 4, 2006, with the winner being crowned BCS Champion.
Addendum; In one of the greatest college football games ever played the second ranked Texas Longhorns defeated the two-time defending National Champion USC Trojans 41-38 and deny the USC Trojans and unprecendented third consecutive National crown and end a 34 game winning streak on Wednesday night, as QB Vince Young of the Texas Longhorns was sensational as he passed for 267 yards and ran for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns including the game winner from 8 yards out on fourth down with 19 seconds remaining in the game, "Do whatever it takes" lamented Vince Young of the Texas Longhorns......The USC Trojans took an early 7-0 lead on a LenDale White of the USC Trojans 4 yd. touchdown run that was setup by a Texas Longhorns' fumble, but the second quarter was dominated by the Texas Longhorns as they outscored the USC Trojans 16-3 in the period as RB'S Selvin Young and Ramonce Taylor of the Texas Longhorns had touchdown runs of 12 and 30 yards respectively to give the Texas Longhorns a 16-10 halftime lead, as the thrid quarter began the USC Trojans showed why they were two time defending champions as they stuffed the Texas Longhorns on their opening series of the second half then took possesion and marched 62 yards on 7 plays with LenDale White of the USC Trojans scoring from 3 yards out to give the USC Trojans a 17-16 lead but the Texas Longhorns responded less than two minutes later as Vince Young of the Texas Longhorns ran in from 14 yards to give the Texas Longhorns a 23-17 lead, the USC Trojans refused to quit though and answered by driving 74 yards in 9 plays with LenDale White of the USC Trojans running for a 12 yd. touchdown for a 24-23 advantage, for the game LenDale White was superb as he rumbled for 124 yards on 20 carries......As the fourth period began Texas Longhorns kicker David Pino missed a field goal and the USC Trojans took possession and marched 80 yards as Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush made breathtaking 26 yard touchdwon run to give the defending champs a 31-23 lead, the Texas Longhorns cut the lead to 31-26 on FG by Pino with a little over eight minutes remaining, but QB Matt Leinart of the USC Trojans who was playing in his final collegiate game calmly guided the USC Trojans down the field on yet another touchdown drive, this one covering 80 yards as he found All-American WR Dwayne Jarrett(10 catches, 121 yards) of the USC Trojans for a dazzling 22 yd. pass and catch to give the USC Trojans and seemingly safe 38-26 lead with only 6:42 left in the game.....Vince Young of the Texas Longhorns quickly drove his tema down field with a mixture of short passes and runs and took only 2:39 seconds to cut the deficit to five at 38-33 as he raced 17 yards, still it appeared that the USC Trojans had control of the game as time was winding down and with the Texas Longhorns defense tiring badly and unable to stop the USC Trojans offense which had scored a touchdown on all of its second half possessions and had driven the ball to midlfield with only a little over two minutes left but faced a fourth and 2 which USC Trojans Head Coach Pete Carroll elected to go for instead of punting and pinning the Texas Longhorns deep in their own territory, with the the National Championship in the balance the Texas Longhorns dug down deep to stop LenDale White just inches short and regain possession taking over at the 45 yard line, where Vince Young of the Texas Longhorns directed a drive for the ages as he lead the Texas Longhorns down to the USC Trojans 8 yd. line with less than 20 seconds left but faced fourth down, from there Vince Young of the Texas Longhorns escaped a heavy rush by the USC Trojans and ran to glory to give the Texas Longhorns a 39-38 advantage, he then added a two point conversion run to make the score 41-38, the USC Trojans could not sustain a drive to get into field goal range with only 19 seconds left and the Texas Longhorns won their first National title in 35 years with Vince Young of the Texas Longhorns being named Rose Bowl MVP for the second straight year, "Well, we couldn't stop them when we had to," USC Trojans coach Pete Carroll said. "The quarterback ran all over the place. This is their night," he said. "It's wonderful doing what we've been doing. We didn't get it done."Matt Leinart concluded his USC Trojans career with another brilliant performance as he passed for 365 yards and a TD and finished with a 37-2 record as a starter for the USC Trojans who finsihed the season 12-1 and ranked #2 nationally, the USC Trojans didnt lose this classic Rose Bowl the Texas Longhorns won it
